Pimp Your Standard DVD Library
January 31, 2008

Walt Disney Home Entertainment is hoping to motivate people to start replacing their current libraries with BD catalog product by offering $10 rebates. If you already own standard DVD versions of The Rock, Con-Air or Crimson Tide, and you additionally buy the same film on BD, Disney will mail you back $10 in return. Disney will bow Crimson Tide on BD on Feb. 5, and the studio recently streeted Con Air and The Rock in the format on Jan. 8. The rebate is valid for these BD titles purchased between now and the end of 2008.
Disney is wise to try to encourage people to start buying high-def catalog titles, which retailers say lags behind sales of new release high-def software. For some people, they have to be thinking, 'Geez, didn't I just buy this movie last year? And come to think of it, I think I've already bought the thing twice already.' Studios always surprise us with really cool special editions, so it's hard to blame people for having more than one copy of a movie. But these purchases add up, and might create some home entertainment weariness for people. However, I do hope this rebate promo proves the right incentive for people, and high-def catalog sales do start rising. For adoption to really take hold, people need to start picking up all sorts of titles, featuring new and older films.

That's really a good idea to encourage people to switch out their collections.
