Netflix Watch Now leading Amazon Unbox, Others
July 9, 2007
Netflix's Watch Now online movie service is
getting substantially more web traffic than competitors Amazon Unbox, Vongo and CinemaNow, according the the Compete Blog, which monitors and analyzes online traffic (via
Hacking Netflix).
Watch Now seems to be taking off, with a sharp spike in traffic month after month. While competitors Vongo and CinemaNow averaged around 150,000 or so page views a month with little change, Netflix page views continue to head skyward, surpassing 600,000 in May. Surely, it's gotta help that the service is free for Netflix subscribers, who already visit the main site frequently to update their movie queues. The company has also been
advertising the service in its TV and online ads.
It's hard to say where all the traffic puts Netflix in the overall movie download space, which is dominated by Apple iTunes. Itunes isn't included in the comparison, I'm guessing because users don't access ITunes through the Web. Same with Microsoft Xbox Live, which isn't included, but is growing according to Xbox guys and studio execs. I've yet to find anyone with numbers that compare all these different services, since they all vary in what they offer (download or VOD) and how they offer it.
Meanwhile, what's going on with Amazon's Unbox? It's below all others, with traffic hovering way under 100,000 page views, according to Compete.
