Best Buy, Samsung Complicatingly Beam Up Star Trek
May 14, 2009
Best Buy is promoting Samsung's latest line of Blu-ray players with savings on Star Trek titles, well timed to the franchise's new installment now in theaters.
People can either purchase any of Samsung's Blu-ray models, latest and older, and will be eligible to purchase Star Trek: Motion Picture Trilogy for $4.99. That's $35 in savings from its original price. Or those who buy a Samsung, can choose to pick up the more extensive version Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection for $19.99, saving $70.
I"m all for savings, but don't you think this is more confusing than it needs to be? Remember in the good old days when you'd just get a free title with Blu-ray player purchase? Now you have to figure out which deal sounds like the better steal - you can pay under $5 for three Star Trek movies, or you can pay under $20 for six. And which ones were the good Star Trek movies again? Do I need either of these sets at all?
Well, I digress. But hopefully manufacturers and retailers will think to keep it simple in pushing these new Blu-ray set-tops.
The new Samsung models include the company's first entries with built-in wireless capabilities, the $399 BD-P3600 and the $499 BD-P4600. They also represent some of the first highly stylized models, as the BD-P4600 is decked out in a red and black color scheme.
