It's Your Turn Blu
November 28, 2007
Tag! You're it, Blu-ray. Sure, these latest HD DVD hardware sales figures aren't as specific as many of us would like them to be. I had to do some digging for up-to-date Xbox 360 HD DVD drive unit sales, and then subtract that number from the Promotion Group's total for a better estimation of actual Toshiba set-top sales.
But I don't think vagueness really deserves the sort of hazing certain Blu-ray fans are giving the HD DVD guys. (Full Disclaimer: I link to a blog run by a former Video Business editor-in-chief)
When was the last time a Blu-ray manufacturer or Blu-ray Disc Association member provided set-top sales? Everyone likes to brag about the millions in Playstation 3 sales. Yes, Blu-ray can be commended for far outpacing the HD DVD install base.
But why don't we get much official info on Blu-ray set-tops? This has to be valid information to get out, since a major BD competitive talking point has been the slew of manufacturers rolling out these Blu-ray standalone players. When people are quiet, it's hard not to assume the worst, that the manufacturers are not happy with their results thus far.
The last time I can remember a Blu-ray camper releasing set-top info was during September's CEDIA show. That was when Sony executives announced that the company had just shipped its 100,000th player. Sony and Samsung, you guys had great Black Friday sales at retail too. We all saw the circulars. And now we want to hear some dish!
