Hope You Really, Really Liked Hannah Montana in 3D
September 17, 2008
Because it looks like we could be getting a lot more of these 3D Blu-ray releases.
Just about a week after
Philips said it has developed 3D Blu-ray and 3D video-on-demand technology, TDVision Systems is promising the upcoming release of a 3D Blu-ray film library, in association with MagicPlay Entertainment. There's no word what these titles will be, and when exactly they'll be available later this year.
MagicPlay appears to be based in China, so there's a chance the titles could be geared for that market.
The goal seems to be to try to better replicate the 3D theatrical experience inside homes through the Blu-ray format. TDVision has created the TDVCodec that will enable their 3D plans.
So far, 3D technology for home entertainment is being steered for Blu-ray exclusively, and not standard DVD. If this really comes to retail, by way of Philips or TDVision/MagicPlay, I think stores would have better ammunitiion to hype the superior qualities of Blu-ray over standard DVD.
As TDVision CEO Manual Gutierrez puts it:
"We are meeting a historic window of opportunity for mass adoption of 3D in the home. This move will simplify the decision for consumers. One will need to buy a single Blu-ray disc that works in 2D and 3D and it plays back on all 3D ready televisions in the highest resolution possible."
