Wal-Mart Pushes Upgrade
May 22, 2008

In my inbox this morning, I was treated to a customer email blast from Wal-Mart.
That wasn't unusual - as a reporter I think I'm signed up with anybody and everybody that sells anything related to home entertainment. But I was taken aback by the prominent placement of a Blu-ray player as part of a note entitled, "A Great Time to Upgrade." It then went on to say, "Shop now on the high tech gear you've been dreaming of." Blu-ray players was the first category called out, and there was a link to go check out Wal-Mart's featured offerings. That was complemented by a picture of Sony's S300 model.
Next were links to 'Apple products', 'HDTVs' and 'All Electronics.'
Wal-Mart backs up its claim that its a 'Great Time to Upgrade' by sale-pricing the Sony player to $369. Normally the player is tagged at $399.
Wal-Mart's email caps off the past several weeks of heightened promotion for BD products at such retailers as Target and Barnes and Noble. If Wal-Mart is copy-catting, I'm sure no Blu-ray backer minds!
