Disneyland: The Happiest Place...For BD Product Placement
February 13, 2008
Disney is re-launching its 'House of the Future' attraction to be really, really, they swear it this time! the House of the Future. About $15 million in gadgets and gizmos will be introduced into the Tomorrowland home, set to launch at California's Disneyland park in May. Some planned examples, like computerized closets that suggest perfect outfits, might seem funky now, but could become a routine part of our lives soon. There will also be plenty of wireless networking, where family members can quickly transfer videos and music among various TVs and computers. Hopefully, this latest House of the Future will be future-proofed enough to last longer than the old 1950s version, which wound up getting destroyed in the late 1960s.
Here is my big pitch to Disney - bring in a Blu-ray player already! Here is a perfect spot to promote high-definition to families. The traveling Disney mall BD tour is on the right track, but it's unlikely to be able to reach every city in the U.S. Everyone knows that everybody gets to Disneyland - it's like kids' training wheels for visiting Vegas eventually. I also think that having a BD player at House of the Future makes sense and wouldn't be pandering product placement. Microsoft, not exactly buds with BD, is a House of the Future sponsor. But Disney has the final say at Disneyland.
Well, it's just a suggestion...at this point it sounds like House of the Future is primarly focusing on digitally delivered services, maybe thanks to Microsoft. But where is the physical media love?
